How bone conduction works

Unlike conventional hearing aids that transmit sound through the ear canal, bone conduction devices bypass this route entirely. Instead, they work by sending sound vibrations directly through the skull bone to the inner ear (cochlea). This allows you to perceive sound even if you have issues with your outer or middle ear.

Who can benefit from bone conduction?

Bone conduction hearing aids can be particularly beneficial for individuals with:

  • Conductive hearing loss: This type of hearing loss is caused by a blockage or problem in the outer or middle ear, preventing sound from reaching the inner ear effectively.

  • Mixed hearing loss: A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

  • Single-sided deafness: Hearing loss in one ear, with normal hearing in the other.

  • Chronic ear infections or drainage: Bone conduction can bypass the ear canal, reducing the risk of irritation.

ADHEAR Bone Conduction System

ADHEAR is the first non-implantable bone conduction system which does not apply pressure onto the skin. The audio processor picks up sounds waves, converts them into vibrations and transmits them onto the bone via the adhesive adapter. The bone transfers the vibrations from the affected ear to the functional contralateral ear.

The ADHEAR bone conduction system consists of an adhesive adapter that is placed onto the skin behind the ear, and an audio processor that is snapped onto the adapter with a simple click.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Indication of severe-to-profound sensorineural heating loss in the affected ear

  • Indication of normal hearing in the contralateral ear

  • No age limit
